Valid identification bearing the current street address within our library district is required when filling out an application for a library card. The signature of a parent, guardian or caregiver is required for a patron under the age of 18 years to process the application. Signature must be provided in person. Parent, guardian or caregiver must present picture identification with the current address. If the identification does not have a current address, the individual must also provide a valid document with the present resident home address. The first library card is issued without a charge. The cost for a lost card replacement is $2.00. The card will be issued immediately, if everything is valid.

Yes. Wireless internet is available at all locations. Please see our Computer Usage Policy/Guidelines as well as your local branch for more details.
Back to topWhat are library loan periods ?
Loan Period - Books, Books on Tape, Compact Discs, Government Documents, Magazines, Pamphlets and Vertical File items may be checked out for a two-week period. Renewals are taken by phone or in person, on or before date due, one time only. Extensions are given for an additional two weeks on all materials except films, DVDs/Videocassettes.
Fines And Fees -To make the library more equitable, the Gary Public Library will no longer charge late fines on most materials (there are some exceptions). Eliminating fines ensures that all people have free access to library books, materials and resources, encouraging the pursuit of life-long learning. As a welcoming place for all, our goal is to increase access and eliminate financial barriers that keep community members from using the library. We want to make it as easy as possible to use the valuable resources we offer the community. Beginning March 15, 2023, all overdue fines will be removed from patron accounts and overdue fines will no longer accrue. Historic fees for lost or damaged items will still remain. Click here for more information.
